@Burnley123 If you will forgive me for intruding into private grief, it seems to me that the key task for any Labour leader is to recover the trust of working-class voters. For that to happen, I think the leader needs to focus on economic and social policies designed to help the most disadvantaged, and to give these priority over fashionable policies like even easier abortion, transgender rights and all that. I don’t think it matters too much whether the leader comes from the left or right of the party, so long as he or she is willing to embrace and respect all shades of opinion. But I think it would help greatly if the leader came from a relatively working or lower middle class background and represented a seat in the north of England. Either Thornberry or Starmer would be a disaster, in my opinion.

What everyone should hope for, I suggest, is that both Conservative and Labour parties should return to where they have traditionally been - clearly differentiated ideologically but tolerant of different shades of opinion within each party. The large majority should make it relatively easy for Johnson to move the Tories in that direction. I hope the new Labour leader will wish, and be able, to do the same.

@Burnley123 Yes, I don’t know enough about her to have a firm view, but it will probably be easier for someone from the left to achieve what I’m talking about than someone from the right.

@adorbz She certainly has the anti-Corbyn quality that may attract voters.
