I Like Politics

Welcome to Election night. A little over 2 hours until the polling stations close and the race begins.

This will be an election night chat thread. Anyone in the UK , regardless of your political persuasion , is welcome to join in. The only rule is that everyone is polite to each other. People may disagree but anyone resorting to trolling , name calling or being abusive will be asked to refrain , leave the thread or even be blocked.

So , inspired by @ArtieKat , have you got your election night drink and nibbles. I've got mine

Just noticed first time ever that nationalist MPs at Westminster outnumber unionist MPs for Northern Ireland.
🤔 United Ireland within sight?
ChampagneAngel · 26-30, F
@SW-User quite possibly.

Though if Sinn Fein MPs take the oath of office they might make more headway!
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@SW-User Do you believe that that evolution can be stopped? Because I think most English people, kinda got over that part, noticing on how people talked about northern-ireland during the entire negotations with the EU?

United Ireland within sight?

Jonathan Powell predicted within 10 years but not 5!

@ChampagneAngel they never will but they lost ground to sdlp who will take their seats so a louder nationalist voice in Westminster esp if brexit goes badly on the border.

However remember Sinn Fein may not sit in the chamber but are very active in Westminster behind the scenes.

@ArtieKat I'd think I'd agree with his assessment. Depending on how brexit affects the province.
ChampagneAngel · 26-30, F
@SW-User if Brexit goes badly it will yes be the Tories' fault but also at least 30% the nationalists'
fault I suspect.

Maybe I don't look at politics through enough ideological terms but it seems stupid to potentially sabotage negotiations in order to have a border poll.
ArtieKat · M
@SW-User I wouldn't disagree - but, then, I have predicted before now that the EU in its present form will cease to exist within that time frame. A Czech friend on here predicts that the Czechs, the Slovaks and the Hungarians will vote to leave. I think we will see a return to an EEC trading bloc
ChampagneAngel · 26-30, F
@ArtieKat and if as a trading bloc it remained we could have avoided 30 years of pain lol (and I say that as a remain voter in 2016!)
ArtieKat · M
@ChampagneAngel I agree - the ever-closer political union is what rankled with many pro-European Leave voters like myself. The growth of nationalism in France particularly is indicative of a sea-change not limited to us in the UK
walabby · M
@SW-User Scotland will leave the UK first, then probably Northern Ireland. Boris will be Prime minister of the "K"...
(The Welsh would like to leave too, but there are too many English migrants living there now)
ArtieKat · M
@walabby As I have said to others, I have no ideological objection to self-determination. There'll be a united Ireland well before the people of Scotland will vote to leave Nanny.... Once the UK is out of the EU and the Scots have to face the reality that they are not going to have some VIP pass to join the EU as a sovereign state the majority will not take that risk. Scotland does not have sufficient GDP to keep them in the manner they want to be kept.
walabby · M
@ArtieKat That could well be true. Time will tell... I just hope that whatever happens is not too hard on people..
ArtieKat · M
@walabby I sincerely believe that Trump's statement that the way is now clear for a substantial trade deal between the UK and the US wiil prove to be true; I also see increased trading opportunities between the UK and Australasia.

We can but wait and see.
