Is This Ironic Or What?

In The Peoples Republic of California they have regulated and taxed gasoline allegedly to encourage people to stop using fossil fuels and use electric cars instead.

Then, they turned off the electricity!

This is a good joke for a standup routine

Though, I doubt the people who have lost their homes due to fires caused by a poorly maintained electric infrastructure will appreciate the humor.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@JoeyFoxx Yup, those dastardly pg&e folks, trying to blame the environmental wackos for the overregulation of the power companies
OggggO · 36-40, M
@sunsporter1649 How does "overregulation" prevent maintenance?
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@OggggO Try cutting down a tree in your backyard
OggggO · 36-40, M
@sunsporter1649 Would take me about half an hour. Although even if I wanted the tree cut down, I'd rather hire someone to come do it because I don't know how to keep it from landing on my head. What on earth is your point?
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@OggggO I have no idea either, but it's kind of amazing how he somehow always manages to find the stupidest possible angle, especially when you consider the circumstances of the last few big PG&E related fires.
OggggO · 36-40, M
@QuixoticSoul I can't wait to hear how individuals cutting down trees is related to regulation of businesses and their resulting inability to maintain their equipment so it operates safely.

Stand Up Routine!?
That's pretty cold.
It's pretty stupid what government has done to the people there - doncha think?
Budwick · 70-79, M
@OggggO If you don't live in California you may not know that simply cutting a tree down on your property is / may be illegal.

Regulations!
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Budwick Are you whining about taxes for road maintenance? Your preposterous idea that the gas tax from the 1970's was to help out Tesla? Or shutting off power to prevent fires? I can't even tell anymore.
OggggO · 36-40, M
@Budwick Having seen the size of California's trees, I am 100% okay with it not being legal for Johnny Public to not knock over a hundred something foot tall piece of lumber without knowing anything about doing it safely.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@OggggO State-wise, you don't actually need a permit to cut down a tree on your property. Some municipalities are more particular, and anyone who is living on timberland will have to comply with forestry regulations.

In reality, if you're out in the boonies, your municipality is likely to start hounding you about defensible space before you even notice that a tree needs to be removed - they're usually more of a goad than a barrier.

And I don't think PG&E and CalFire even need your permission if they see a problem.
OggggO · 36-40, M
@QuixoticSoul You stop bringing facts into this!
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@Budwick California government has done a lot of stupid things over the years.

But, explain how the gas tax and the blackouts are related please?
Budwick · 70-79, M
@JoeyFoxx
explain how the gas tax and the blackouts are related please?
It's the irony - California government pushing to eliminate usage of fossil fuel in favor of electric cars - then they literally pull the plug.
OggggO · 36-40, M
@Budwick California government didn't pull the plug on anything.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Budwick The gas tax from the 1970s has nothing to do with electric cars.

PG&E shutting off power lines to try and prevent fires has nothing to do with the government. In fact, the government is birching about it.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@Budwick So, in other words, there's zero relation.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@QuixoticSoul The end result is citizens are fucked.
OggggO · 36-40, M
@Budwick Because of a private company's lust for more money, not because of the government.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@OggggO How does turning off electricity satisfy a lust for money?

And the uber need for electricity is certainly a government issue.
OggggO · 36-40, M
@Budwick They turned it off because they didn't want to get sued for starting more fires. They're getting sued for starting fires because they have neglected maintaining their equipment in favor of giving their executives bonuses.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@OggggO Who are you blaming for mismanagement of the forest land?
Oh, and who are you blaming for the stupid high taxes on fuel?
OggggO · 36-40, M
@Budwick Neither of those things caused PG&E to commit felonies that led to deaths and massive destruction.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@OggggO As far as I know you are correct.
If you don't like the posts, you're not required to reply you know.
OggggO · 36-40, M
@Budwick And you're not required to make shit up and shift blame, yet here you are.
