What do we know about the psychology of "the base?"

The more Baby-trump exaggerates and lies, repeats his exaggerations and lies, affirms those exaggerations and lies, and avoids reason to back up his exaggerations and lies, "the base" will continue to follow him even though, individually, they know what he is saying doesn't measure up. Yet, as part of the crowd, they are virtually helpless... similar to the population of North Korea that has long lost the will to challenge any of the Kim's.
