@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow The people of Puerto Rico have been voting on the independence issue since, I believe, 1967, and the issue has been soundly defeated each time.

@sunsporter1649 Things are far more complicated. For example the vote in 2017 was worded in such a way to split the vote for independence.

It would be like if the UK Brexit vote had had a hard and soft brexit option for the leave option. Since people would disagree on the technicalities of how independence would work it splits the vote making sure it never gets a clean result. It introduces the biggest flaw of first past the post into the equation.
