Is he actually pushing to buy it, or is it merely an inquiry/question/pondering/discussion? There’s nothing wrong with “hey, I’ve got an off the wall idea, what do you think?” Sometimes off-the-wall ideas can become good ideas, and other times they get tossed in the bin. Just like any other proposal, I’d want to see the numbers from some sort of cost-benefit analysis. After my initial “is he nuts?” reaction, I’m starting to think that this might be one of the few ideas he’s thrown out there that is actually in his wheelhouse in terms of his background and knowledge. I’ll reserve judgment until it becomes an actual proposal with dollars behind it.

I’m not saying I’m in favor of it or against it. I’m just saying I’d need to see more data before having an opinion. I’m not opposed to merely floating ideas, though. If it ends up being a bad idea, so be it. If it ends up being an opportunity that makes sense, so be it. I’m usually so critical of him in general that when I see something that I might end up agreeing with (like his organ donation initiative), I feel compelled to speak up. This is a rare instance where he’s throwing out an out-of-the-box idea that might be worth listening to. Other than the analysis, it doesn’t cost anything to listen and consider an idea. @tenente

Like I said, there’s nothing wrong with floating an idea like this one. It would probably have been better had this been kept on an internal fact-finding level this early, but this administration seems to struggle with keeping ideas under wraps and behind closed doors while they’re being developed and until they’re ready for prime time. @jackjjackson

Also, Alaska is closer, we already have an airbase in Greenland, and missile defense can be put in there without an acquisition.
