When do we elect our electoral voters?

I don't get it...

If our electoral voters vote for the president and the state elects the electoral voters, why should I even vote? I don't ever recall voting for the electors in California. I don't even know who they are!? So, why should I even vote?

The electoral college doesn't have to vote based on the popular vote in each state. They can if they choose to, but they can also ignore the popular choice, and vote for the other person.
