There is the classic maxim that if you are not a socialist at 18, you have no heart, and if you are not a conservative by 40, you have no brain.

It's surprisingly true. Idealism is for the young and innocent. Reality is for the mature and experienced
@NataliaT Getting older for some means reclaiming old, sexist and racist fears--conservative ideals. Not all of us succumb to them.

I think that's a fallacy.

@beckyromero A maxim is not a truism. It's merely someone's opinion, expressed succinctly.

Baldly generalising it as a fallacy is intellectually lazy. What turns an observation into a fallacy? A single contrary example? Does a Jeremy Corbyn or a Bernie Sanders disprove the general tendency for older people to adopt a more realistic, conservative approach to politics.

@bijouxbroussardThere is only one way to charitably describe this comment, and that is blind, brainwashed socialist stupidity. Clearly you are too far gone for re-education if you believe “Conservative Ideals” are about sexism and racism, but just for the record, Conservatism is a philosophy that respects tradition, individual freedom, individual opportunity, rule of law, property rights, minimal government interference in daily life. Or, as the Declaration of Independence puts it simply – the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Thus Conservative ideals seek to preserve a range of institutions such as religion, democratic government, an independent judiciary, with the aim of emphasizing social stability and continuity.

Racist? It was the Tories (Conservatives) that fought for and achieved the abolition of slavery in the 1700s. It was a Republican (Conservative )who achieved emancipation in the USA. And Australian conservatives abolished the “white Australia “ policy.

Sexist? Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, Theresa May, Christine Lagarde

But why waste anymore time arguing with pea-brained socialists.

To launch into insults is typically racist right conservative, so that doesn't surprise me.
Guess what ? Not all progressives are socialists, at least not where I live. So your ignorance and assumptions are tiresome.

And you obviously are confused about the difference between political ideology vs
political party, because there is one. There are conservative Democrats and always have been. There are also liberal Democrats and moderate Democrats. There used to be liberal (progressive) Republicans, not so much anymore. "Southern strategy" post Civil Rights era started the shift that exists today, with most of the Dixiecrats shifting to the GOP and people of color leaving it in droves. The Democrats, who claimed to support "the common man" started including people of color in labor, education, and social programs, more progressive platforms. Republicans began to focus on business and the wealthy.

Conservative ideals are are about traditionalism. Racism is still a strong tradition in the U.S. The Republican Party started out as progressive not conservative---to shake up the status quo. Our abolitionists and our suffragettes were not conservatives---not about maintaining the status quo. So you can't give conservative that credit---the Southern Democrats "Dixiecrats" were social conservatives dedicated to preserving society as it existed pre-Reconstruction.

You don't know our history, clearly. Social conservatism has always stood for the traditional racism and sexism in the U.S. And social conservatives still support it and make excuses. And label anything else as "socialism". You can all go to blazes as far as I'm concerned.

These are the conservatives in the United States today, the far right:
