Patriotism is overrated.

What you think?

General patriotism, no

Sycophantic national pride to the detriment of all others, yes.

To me, patriotism is like drawing a shape on the floor and saying, "Everything inside this shape is great because it's inside the shape". It makes no sense.

I feel like patriotism gets confused with nationalism. Patriotism is great; devotion and support for your country! but nationalism gets into people's heads creating chaos and divisions within different people whereas with patriotism could most likely spark inspiration to do the same

Patriotism is great. Nationalism is not.
@SW-User I've been telling folks that Europe is going to be shifting towards right wing nationalism for a while now! ( I hate how I sound! ) It's like a wheel that just keeps turning as longs as people live together in autonomous groups. We go left and the blacksmiths and the farmers complain. We go right and the professors and journalists complain. Each political shift is a backlash from the last one. Here's to many more! 🍻

@puck61 Though I have to admit, reading a lot of news headlines was real life stand up comedy, here's to many more 🍺

@SW-User Exactly.

No not really, I mean you should be proud of your country but at the same time be real about it.
Pherick · 41-45, M
Patriotism is great, but once it hits the level of nationalism, we have problems.

@calnative nope,
Cierzo · M
Patriotism is natural.
@Cierzo Yeah, it's basically like a football club, or cricket, or global thermonuclear war.
Cierzo · M
@puck61 It is about a need of belonging

Go Army!!!!

I agree. Patriotism isn't a bad thing and it can be a lot of fun, but it's definitely overrated these days as it's seen as some kind of holy virtue or something.
It is often applied as a synonym for compliance which is definitely overrated.

I think it depends on the power you are patriotic to ... Like I'm in the uk, and the powers that be don't represent my reality, so patriotism is lost on me
I think in the US, it is 'under-rated' by the culture warriors. It's trendy among culture / identity freaks to express a kind of antitheses of patriotism and show a measure of disdain and shame for this country. Like everything else these freaks come up with, it's not good, but that is more of the pseudo liberal chic. "Not good" is good, and 'good' is not good. Everything is just trends and fashion with them anyway. Bunch a "Trendy Wendy's"....

On SW - absolutely!! 90% are fake patriots and will (metaphorically) stab you in the back!! They spin on a dime!!
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
Patriotism is fine, just don't be retarded about it.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
Patriotism is shite. Why be proud of imaginary lines in the sand? It almost always leads to nationalism too which is a toilet bowl.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@BlueMetalChick true, I mean I could use Armenia as an example there. Armenia has a unique culture with its own alphabet, language, architecture, etc.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@basilfawlty89 Regardless, I understand what you mean. Having a patriotic attitude be a centerpoint of your personality it quite stupid.
@basilfawlty89 * Has long heated ad hominem laced argument with you.*
