He's playing chicken with the new President of Mexico, who is giving Trump the finger by refusing to stop any of the caravans pouring into the US. He is angry that our trade agreement with Mexico is costing us money and yet the new President still feels he must behave in this way.
By closing the legal points of entry, he will stop goods AND legal visa workers from moving into the US and he will put a hurt on the Mexican economy, and all of the South American economies which use our legal entry ports. He would like to show the new President of Mexico that it is not very bright to support something harmful to the United States, like massive caravans of 20,000 people.
While it is true that American businessmen will suffer a lack of labor, they can certainly pick it up by hiring the more than 4000 illegal immigrants who had to be released into the country yesterday because there are no beds for them. They can also obtain their imported goods from China, or from other countries. They had best scramble to make other arrangements.
