I just ran some simple numbers.

By the time of slavery's abolition the US had condoned slavery for 88 years (1864-1776).

Around that time the average wage of someone of their occupation was $10/year making the total sum owed in 1864 to be $880.

With inflation that would be worth $22,500 today.

Assuming we literally paid every single African American (which we wouldn't) that means the US would have to give them $945B (based on a population of 42M African Americans).

Given this data, would you accept that $945B is an acceptable sum to pay to finally repay the ancestors of slaves and finally remove the idea of white guilt from US culture?

I don't feel that I, personally, owe anyone anything. My father's grandfather came here from England after the emancipation of the slaves, and my mother's family were never slave owners. So does that mean that because only my mother's family was living here, even though not involved, that I only owe half a reparation?

In order to do these reparations properly, you would have to run the genealogy of each and every person living in the United States today, because I refuse to pay for something my ancestors didn't do and most people feel that way. The idea that the entire country has to pay reparations in their taxes for something done in the south just doesn't fly with me or with most people.

I also want to know exactly WHO these descendants of slaves are, and how many are living in the United States today....and if these descendants of slaves are half white now, do they have to pay themselves? If they are 1/4 white, do they only have to pay themselves 1/4 of a reparation? Do the descendants of Hispanics living in California before the emancipation have to pay reparations because they are United States citizens? Do the Native Americans have to pay? After all, they were LIVING in the country while the south kept slaves, as were my mother's ancestors. Even though none of them were involved, do they ALL have to pay?

Or is it JUST the white people, being kicked to the curb again by some white A$$ who has deep, deep neurotic guilt, or some partially black A$$ who WANTS the white people (and everyone else, apparently) to feel lots of financial pain for something they didn't do personally. And then what is to prevent the children now unborn of the repaid slaves descendants from filing suit against their parents who took the money and blew it? THEY won't be paid, will they? Nope.

The entire concept is so deeply stupid, as are most of these so-called progressive ideas, that it is just hard for me to believe that real people are really this dumb.

@4meAndyou You asked good questions that I'm sure that those you are for reparations won't be able to answer. This is a gimmick to try to buy votes. This will also divide the country even more.

@GunSmoke9 I am starting to wonder, quite seriously, with no clowning, if the divide in our country is between those who are unable to think and those who can.

@IstillmissEP I'll have to look that up. Emotion always clouds thought, and makes us stupider when we need all our wits about us, as ANY woman will tell you.

@4meAndyou The same with socialism, it sounds good on paper, until people think about it.
4meAndyou · F
@4meAndyou BTW, the THREE politicians who are really this brainless and are proposing this idea are Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, and Juan Castro. A white, a partially black, and a partially Hispanic.
4meAndyou · F
@GunSmoke9 But we have a few million millennials who don't understand what full socialism would really be like. They don't remember seeing the bread lines in Russia on television...elderly Russian women standing in line for hours to get bread and then the bread runs out before you get yours.

They can't imagine rationing food as they had to do during WWII, when you couldn't get butter, and margarine was rationed out at one pound per family per month.

They can't imagine not being to buy a coke or some french fries at a restaurant.

They haven't brought the food parcels being handed out free by the Venezuelan government into their conscious reality, as something that could happen to THEM...macaroni, rice, and lentils and that's it. No meat. They don't have a clue...not one clue....that egalitarianism is not the same as equality.
@4meAndyou People who prosper in the US does so in part thanks to the slaves who built the country. You're all guilty. Being British too actually makes you more guilty, not less. You guys had slaves for much longer.

@Qwerty14 If you believe that I, or any other citizen of the United States are "guilty" in some way for something done by the ancestors of those who were actually involved in slave-owning, you have fallen off the deep end of the pool and have stayed down too long.

That's like saying my great- great-great-grandfather went to an exotic island and shot and ate a Dodo bird, (not the last one, but one of them), and because of that, every one of his descendents into eternity are guilty of species extinction, and now you can call me a Nazi.

If your theory is correct, then your ancestors must have been head hunters and ate human brains. Because of their actions, in order to expiate your eternal guilt, you were born without one.
@4meAndyou interesting you mention Nazis. The Germans did pay reparations for WWI and WWII so they have very much paid their share for what their ancestors did
4meAndyou · F
@Qwerty14 You are discussing a nation of totalitarian a-holes, who were defeated in war.
@4meAndyou And? You're saying that Africans would have to defeat the Americans in war before you'd allow them reparations? Seems excessive
4meAndyou · F
@Qwerty14 I'm not saying that at all.
@4meAndyou I'm glad because that would be excessive
