We haven't really had democracy for that long, and if you look at communism as sort of a parralel evolution thing of fascism from socialism, some of the core features never really became unpopular for very long.
When people are unhappy with their governments and their lives, I think they're easy prey for any kind of demagoguery and authoritarianism is really the obvious choice for power hungry and self interested leaders who have little regard for the welfare of anyone but themselves.
