Why do some people believe Socialism is the way forward when it has never worked?

Because its an evolutionary trait that has bought success. Humans are the most selfish grasping creatures in the food chain and the only being that has learned to lie. So running with total self interest is natural. Of course, some people are trying to evolve beyond that.
