Why do some people believe Socialism is the way forward when it has never worked?

Why are people in the U.S. so terrified of it when forms of it actually do work in other developed countries, and have, like healthcare in Canada, parts of Europe, Australia ? People don’t even know what socialism is, yet they’re frightened.
