Why do some people believe Socialism is the way forward when it has never worked?

Why are people in the U.S. so terrified of it when forms of it actually [b]do[/b] work in other developed countries, and have, like healthcare in Canada, parts of Europe, Australia ? People don’t even know what socialism is, yet they’re frightened.
