What a shambles.
So last night a vote to ensure we don't leave with no deal.... Which the EU have to agree to BTW we can cancel it unilaterally but not extend it.
Vote to demand that the backstop is re-written.... Something that the EU have steadfastly said won't happen.
So... No deal still to me looks the likely outcome EU will dig heels in say the PM you took 18 months to negotiate the backstop and you backed it. We request extension they say no it's this deal or none....

@SW-User If the MPs can't even vote to extend the deadline, it's not looking good for other options. A second ref is obviously not going to happen and there is still no consensus for any Brexit deal.

@Burnley123 The no deal Brexit that the Money people always wanted looms.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@whowasthatmaskedman This is why (as a left Euroskeptic) I defend remain. The most likely hard Brexit screws the country and benefits the right.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@Burnley123 But it looks as if there might be a majority for an amended version of the May deal if the EU, or rather EC, could be persuaded to budge. At long last it looks as if we might get to the position where we should have been long ago, with the EU rather than HMG being seen as the obstacle to a workable deal. But I know, I’m always an optimist on this subject.

@Burnley123 As a complete outsider I see it differently. I am for the Brexit, hard or soft. But because of the apparent future direction of Europe under the EU. I believe it will suffer the slow death of mediocrity. Bailing out members time and again who should be surgically removed for economic vandalism.

@Burnley123 which is why we should have thought about this before maybe.... 🤔
Negotiated a deal, which was not just the government but had cross parliamentary involvement. Then put that to a vote before or at time to fixed the article 50 Time line. To have fixed the end date then brought back a deal that was destined to be voted down now looks in hindsight a bit of a risk

@whowasthatmaskedman I follow Yanis Varoufakis. He agrees with you on analysis of the EU but agrees with me on Brexit. Its the wrong time to leave and the wrong people leading it. Its a badly conceived solution to real problems.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Burnley123 I cant fault your logic. But I have the luxury of distance.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SW-User Very much so. I think the real strategy of the ERG and Brexit right is to create a crash so they have the excuse for more austerity and the Singapore model. They won't acknowledge the real agenda though and are happy to play people.
I have a pinned post about Brexit bringing cuts to public services.

@whowasthatmaskedman I don't have that lol. Varoufakis is good on this and has articles about Brexit online.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Burnley123 Just remember that a lot of the money people who stand to profit from Brexit are Europeans. I dont expect a better deal from the EU. Killings like this dont come along every day.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Some industries might to well out of Brexit if they are industries which don't export and face competition from the EU. For everyone else it will be bad.
In the country there is a strange complacency and a lack of worry.

@Burnley123 Apathy and resignation??
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Yes and yes

@Burnley123 yep privatisation of the NHS just like Moog and Farage have wanted. GM crops from USA etc. It'll be a brave new world we're entering. Just don't get sick if you're not working
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Burnley123 If Winston Churchill showed up how he would be howled down. I am afraid I dont have the answer for society.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@Burnley123 @whowasthatmaskedman I think part of the explanation for the complacency and lack of worry is national self-confidence. A sort of Dunkirk spirit if you like. It’s striking that although many argue that a no deal Brexit would hit the poor worst, the people making this argument are typically well-heeled metropolitan types.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@MartinII There is something about the idea of Brits being "independent" instead of just a part of Europe again that has appeal.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Yes, and it’s not just nostalgia (though there is some of that). The UK is still one of the world’s largest economies, with plenty of friends outside Europe.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@MartinII And I am sure a lot of Trade deals are already in the "prenegotiation" stage.. Just in case.

@whowasthatmaskedman this is a useful summary of where we'll be on 29th March

Essentially we're trying to get all 70 countries we have agreements with via the EU to accept us independently with same terms.
