Should the West get involved in Venezuela?

First up, I don't support the Maduro Government. They are corrupt and dictatorial. Their economic management since Chavez died has been a disaster. The opposition though is awful, perhaps more awful. The anti-government forces are funded by Oligarchs and have launched a coup before. They also employ violence and have been waging a slow-burn civil war against the regime for a long time.

This is not about democracy or human rights but about oil. It's just like virtually other US intervention in Latin America. Trump was meant to be a non-interventionist President. John Bolton's appointment would suggest that he makes Hillary look like a dove. Other Nato countries, including my native UK, are sadly following that lead.

This is a carrot and stick moment. The US does not want foreign powers gaining meaningful influence in the Americas, period. But the use of force in Venezuela might be too radioactive. What's the other option? The carrot. Work with Venezuela, cut a deal that makes the Venezuelans put the Russians and Chinese on the second and third seat. Deal maker president, where are you?

To sum up, the choice is between a regime and oligarchs? The poor Venezuelan citizens.

@jackjjackson Agreed

Funny that Trump is probably going to do the most Hillary Clinton thing imaginable.

Some people have accused the US government of being controlled by the wealthy and the greedy. Why should Venezuela be any different.

The people voted for this disaster. Let them enjoy the consequences. Elections matter.
How involved is "involved"? I don't see military intervention being worthwhile on the horizon, but refusing to recognize Maburro's presidency may be a good, measured response.

@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP Its a response which is aimed at supporting right wing oligarchs.
@Burnley123 even if that were true, recent history indicates that would lead to the lesser of 2 evils. Anything's better than the status quo. In the long-term, .ve needs democracy more than it needs to get rid of Maburro, and it's no going to get it by leaving the current dictator in power
