Did anybody watch the White House smackdown with Pelosi, Schumer, Trump and Pence?

It was priceless. The journalists were invited. There was Nancy claiming transparency and she tried to shoo the press from the room!

I haven't seen it yet, but my "left news" feed says Trump threw a tantrum, goaded by Pelosi and Schumer brilliantly.

I figured that means Trump got the drama he wanted and stood firm for the cameras and both sides can convince their supporters they owned the room.

Was I wrong?

@MistyCee yep you are wrong. pelosi wanted transparency yet she tried to shoo the press out. trump backed them both into a corner. there was NO tantrum. nada. he said build the wall or i shut down the govt. it is my mantle. after that, pelosi and schumer tried to shame trump. christmas, the economy is bad. yada yada
@akindheart Cool. I'll check out out later. So, Trump's going to shut down the government, or wait until they come crawling back to him?
akindheart · 61-69, F
@MistyCee Yes. he is going to shut down the govt. i hope pelosi crawls on her face. and i want to smack the smirk off Schumer's. watch it-you might have a difference of opinion but there was no tantrum.
@akindheart The whole thing sounds like posturing to me. Democrats think they need to oppose the wall, Trump demands the wall, and both sides are trying to spin that, and the shutdown mess in their favor.

I need to watch it... But, I really can't see how they would expect any negotiations to happen with cameras on. Surrender, maybe, and drama, but not any compromises.

@MistyCee Hi Misty. I actually watched the whole segment, and Shumer didn't like it that Trump wasn't to be moved on the wall and reaffirmed that he will shut down the government if we do not get what we want.

Shumer was disrespectul to the office of President. Then he went right outside to the media waiting there, and made up a story about Trump throwing a tantrum, because he knew the media wanted to hear that or something similar. Shumer is the master of the vitriolic sound bite.
@4meAndyou Hey there!

I just got finished watching it. I didnt see an on camera tantrum from Trump, but I think I did just see Nancy and Chuck outmanuever him and back him into owning the shutdown on camera.

Unless Trump's dumber than he seems, I think he'll be pretty pissed. I know Pence was.

On the other hand, if the Wall is your thing, Trump was clear and definite about where his priorities are.

@MistyCee Right.No tantrum. I think Trump has been pissed for about...um...3 years with what and who he has to deal with.

I saw the thing on camera about owning the shutdown, and the conservatives are saying he was actually playing to his base, who will LOVE a shutdown over the wall, and I think it was the other way around (outmaneuvering) for that reason. Trump WANTS to own this, and make this issue his own.
@4meAndyou No doubt it plays well to the wall folks.

But I don't think he scored many points with anyone else, and I kind of think he wanted to.

I'll bet, after this, Chuck and Nancy aren't going to be calling him. And they'll probably milk the daylights out of it if he calls them to negotiate.

@MistyCee Agree wholeheartedly.

@MistyCee my feelings despite what the media said, trump won. he backed them into a corner.
@akindheart I think the media has made way too much of Nanchucking, myself, but coming from my own biased point of view, I don't think it was much of a win for Trump.

He came off to me as immature,dishonest, obstinate and unable or unwilling to debate, or even negotiate.

He stood up for the wall. Great. And he said he'd be willing to make everyone suffer if he doesn't get it.

It seems like I've seen this show before, and it usually ends up with him changing his tune or just moving on.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@MistyCee amazing how 2 people can see it so differently. the problem is the DEms do NOT want him to be successful. this is for US not them. they need to build the wall.
@akindheart That's one difference, I guess. I don't mind if the Democrats keep Trump from being successful personally.

It seems to me like they "walked the walk" and "talked the talk" about the difference between border security as a policy issue and the wall as a campaign issue quite well, while he fumbled and said something incoherent on that point.

I get it though. I'm biased because I think border security is a policy that should be addressed, while the "wall" is basically rhetoric, ugly messaging and a waste of money.

At the end of the day, who won? Both sides stood their ground, but Trump's on the hotseat as President, with dogs yapping all around him, and I don't think he make any real progress here or scored any big points.

It's a show, of course, designed to win hearts and minds, but I didn't feel very moved by it.
