Americans only: without googling, can you explain the difference between communism and socialism? Discussion.

I'm not a politician, but my take is in communism the state owns most everything, there can be no free trade, and the individual has few rights to them selves. Socialism is a wide variety of government types, but still the individual is at the mercy of a large controlling government.
