Well, the Soviet Union was a mortal threat to our existence, and the major states that existed that called themselves Communist were largely single-party, oppressive totalitarian states. People haven't forgotten the cold war.

@4meAndyou I'm not sure about the long-term impact of McCarthy's politics on the public opinion of Communism in the United States, but I do know that the red scare is at least taught in American history as a very negative event and as a "witch hunt".
