Why do Americans hate and distrust Communism? Discuss.

Well to be controversial, I don't think Americans can distinguish between socialism and communism. It's true that many so called communist countries have been highly oppressive and tyrannical which doesn't help. On the other hand America has done its best to undermine them and to see that they fail. It's a very complicated story.

@TheConstantGardener You do cut right to the chase, because that is the next question I plan to pose to the SWeeps right after this one. The difference between communism and socialism. Because you are correct, they are different.
