Should people be worried about Bolsonaro's election as Brazilian President?

Obviously, this matters much more to people in Brazil but I also think it has international significance.

Breitbart, for example, supports what is likely to be the impending Brazilian military dictatorship:

For some light utopian escapism, I'm gonna watch some more House of Cards on Netflix

I’m worried about it. The whole world seems to be going in a fascist direction. Did we learn nothing at all from WW2?
jim44444 · 70-79, M
Only a small percentage of the population lived through WWII, the majority know of it through movies and history class. They have no feeling for what brought it about. I have hope that the upcoming USA election will put us back on track to a civilized society.

@jim44444 From your lips to God's ears.

This is another sign of the nationalism that is spreading throughout the world. The US is hardly unique in this. What concerns me the most is the similarities between now and the 1930s that led us into dictatorships in multiple areas, and a devastating world war.

@windinhishair Thanks for the reply and I agree.

@Burnley123 Trump consumes the headlines, and much of that is warranted, but it is also important to recognize what is happening globally that also has wide-reaching impacts. None of us exists in a vacuum. Often I just have to get away from US politics and listen to the BBC, Deutsche Welle, and other international broadcasts.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@windinhishair Fair enough. I was being a bit of an arse with my comment below and I know most people on here are American so its understandably gonna be their point of reference. Trump is abysmal and its right that he takes up news but it does seem to drown out all other things.

I completely agree that he doesn't exist in a vacuum.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Sorry to be a cynic but if you don't mention Donald Trump in a politics post, then nobody comments.

Edit: I was being a bit facetious here, sorry

YES YES THEY FUCKING SHOULD BE
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
And to think it's barely thirty years since their last military dictatorship. People really do seem to have very short memories nowadays.

This is truly frightening though , this guy could be Trump on steroids.

Trump just tweeted, that he had a wonderful call with Bolsonaro, and they agreed to cooperate on military, trade and everything.

If you're thinking domino theory, then I don't think so. What I think will happen is Brazil will go through another cycle of a different type of corruption, they will tire of it eventually.

In Brazil, I think it's about replacing one type of corruption with another.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Northwest If there is a domino effect, it'll be Latin American only and won't extend to any western country. I just see it as an example of what could happen in the west deep down the line.

I agree with you about corruption. Under a dictatorship that gets worse because it's easier to hide. There has always been rampant corruption in Brazil. Why its such a big deal now is that you have a free press and social media to expose it all.

I hope you are right and that Brazil sets a bad example for nationalism but I think the Brazilian people are gonna suffer a lot.

@Burnley123
I think the Brazilian people are gonna suffer a lot.
Of that, I have no doubt, but the Brazilian people, as in those who live in the slums, have always been ignored, and one way or another, they end up paying a high price.

The wild card is Trump. If he thinks he can go Banana Republic style with fragmented South American regimes, then he might endorse and try to work with Bolsonaro. Then it's back to the 1960s-1990s

You guys call him fascist, but he's just an old fashion conservative. The culture warriors have been going off the deep end since the early sixties and you have turned the 'abnormal' into 'normal', so you see any resistance to the abnormality as "fascist". He's there because the people want him there. Perhaps they are tired of abnormal behavior being normalized. I'm not carrying my torch and pitch fork on this one, so just count me among the non included! Thank you.
@CountScrofula I really don't know if anything a leftist says is truth. It's gotten to the point that I figure anyone the left freaks out about must be on the right track. The left is like a reverse barometer. If the left swears it's truth, it's sure to be a lie, and if the left says it's a lie, it's sure to be truth. There are no words foul enough to describe how I feel about the left as it is now.

Isn't that a danger though? Could it not mean that you are gonna support anyone who the left criticises under any circumstances. You don't have to agree with me about everything but I think people can be manipulated.
@Burnley123 The kind of dark ages conservatism that Bolsonaro is into would never get off the ground here. I don't want the inquisition, or anything. I don't believe in trying to choreograph other people's karma if they aren't hurting anyone. I heard Bolsonaro is pretty 'anti gay'. We have a lot of work to do to get back to Andy's Mayberry and Norman Rockwell's "Malt Shop", I would like to see a world where abortion was not the best option for so many people. It would take a sudden epidemic of 'responsibility' and 'respect' and I don't see how that can happen without major divine intervention . I honestly would like to see 'hard work', 'respect', 'responsibility', and traditional religious values play a larger role in society

Worried or not, they'll most likely regret it within a decade or two.

Another nutcase.
