It's more a matter of general principle and belief. Traditionally, the Republicans stand for less federal government interference and stronger states' rights, but they also cater to the wealthier of the nation and have been known to fund military endeavors while cutting social programs and education.
Democrats rely on social programs for those who need them, traditionally more concerned with the least of the nation and communal responsibility.
