Trump is gutting America
America is an idea. Strip freedom, human rights, democracy and the rule of law from what the United States represents to the world and America itself is gutted.
In what ways have these things happened?
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@Niburu People of color (black people)have to fear being shot dead ..because they get pulled over for broken tail lights.

People who are citizens and have lived here most of their lives now fear being deported.

People who were not afforded a college education, that work minimum wage jobs(sometimes 2 or 3 jobs) now worry that they can't go to the doctor because it is too expensive.

We are toying with the idea of having a lifetime seat appointed to a man who wants to use the color of people's skin as a reason to keep them from this country.

We are pissed at Nike for using a black athlete in a campaign to raise awareness..for the lives of black people.

We think we need to decide the productive rights of women.

Shall I continue?

This has nothing to do with Trump, it happened before his term and it will happen after.

If they are actual citizens then their fears have no basis in reality.
That said it is not beyond the realm of possibility some ICE agents could fuck up and deport someone who is a citizen.
Healthcare costs have gone up because of the ACA, nothing that Trump has done as of yet has lowered or raised healthcare costs.

Nobody I know or even overheard anywhere has mentioned a lifetime presidency, maybe you saw on some lefty conspiracy site.
He's using unstable governments, illegal crossing and unverifiable backgrounds ads a reason to keep people out. Ethnicity or color of skin has never been mentioned.

Who is this we?
The Nike add scheme doesn't offend me by the way.
Is there anyone who is not aware of the disparities in our culture as it relates to the lives of black people?
It's all over the news, internet, etc..

I don't like abortion but I would never ban a woman's right to get one.

Please do.

@Niburu I'd add Trump's attacks on the free press, his desire to explicily politicize the justice system, his unfamiliarity with the first amendment (or, really the whole constitution) and his unabashed racism, which runs counter to democracy.

Locking up children also isn't great for human rights.

This goes both ways, but I don't disagree with your point.

It was pretty well politicized before he got into office but he's made it worse, at the the same time though he's pulled some people at of the woodwork.
his unfamiliarity with the first amendment (or, really the whole constitution)
I think he used to running a company and not really knowledgable how government works. His ego is his biggest enemy, he's said some really stupid stuff.

and his unabashed racism, which runs counter to democracy
.

I don't know if it's racism or his unfiltered New York mouth.
Locking up children also isn't great for human rights
This has been going on for over a decade, he should take the opportunity to make sure it doesn't happened like it has been.

That said anyone crossing our borders illegally should expect to be detained.

For the record I neither voted for Trump or Clinton, I voted for the most qualified candidate - Johnson.

@Niburu I think you've mostly agreed with me that Trump is diminishing America.

I agree with you that he isn't alone, and that he's just accelerating or accentuating existing problems, but that doesn't alter the point.

As for the racism: I've never heard another NYer claim that Nazis were fine people.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
So much here that shows me that while people scream about taking personal responsibility they aren't taking it on themselves, nor are they expecting the people they should be expecting to, to do so.
As for the racism: I've never heard another NYer claim that Nazis were fine people.
Having grown up in the NYC area I have heard that kind of talk - now that was back in 70's and 80's mind you and not Nazis per say but a lot of talk about white supremacy - both terms apparently have been conflated to mean the same thing now.

I'm not sure Donny knew (or cared) who and which groups we're showing up in Charlottesville. Some were there strictly from a defense of there southern heritage viewpoint and others were there as white supremacists.
WoodyAq · M
@Niburu Unfortunately, "southern heritage" in this context is also racism: those statues were put up as part of the resegregation effort in the 1920s.

In any case, that was the most grotesque of Donny's racism but far from the only incident.

And it is inconsistent with human rights and democracy when practiced by POTUS.

As a former New Yorker now living in Richmond,VA
I can see multiple sides to this.
One of them is peoples pride in their southern history and despite why they were put up a large contingent of people here want them to stay up and it has nothing to do with racism.
There are also people here who want them to stay up for hatefull bigoted reasons as well.
WoodyAq · M
@Niburu I don't mind the former group as long as they clearly distinguish themselves from the latter.

My experience is that they aren't racist, but mostly they don't make the effort, or aren't knowledgeable enough about their heritage to do it.

I actually despise laziness and ignorance more than I do racism, so I'm reluctant to let them off the hook.
Niburu · 51-55, M
@WoodyAq My experience with locals here are that most everyone is aware of what happpened and why, for good or ill.
WoodyAq · M
@Niburu Okay. So they can't claim ignorance. It's just racism or intellectual laziness then.
