I'm actually kind of confused of the hero-worship for McCain from liberals. His death is sad but his politics were genuinely horrific. Splitting with the GOP on Trump and torture, and showing some basic human decency to opponents doesn't make up for the rest of his entire political career.

@CountScrofula Many of us are comparing him to the hardliners who seem to make up the majority of the GOP nowadays. I always give the disclaimer that I didn’t agree with him politically. There really was a time when one could disagree and still respect the person.

@bijouxbroussard You hit the nail on the head. I never liked his politics, but I never believed for a minute that he wasn't an honorable man. Look at how be answered the woman in the 2008 debates who called Obama an Arab. He called her out on it. Now consider how the same question would be answered by the current president. Enough said.

@windinhishair @bijouxbroussard Sure but showing basic human civility sometimes is a low bar.
I'm happy that people are trying hard to show civility and decency with his death because we shouldn't cheerlead the deaths of political opponents (like a lot of the Trump supporters are doing with him). But I'm cautious about him being lionized. A close look at his behaviour - both personal and political - reveals someone I'm not too enamored with.
