I can't think of anything more keeping in the spirit of a free Democracy than Trump pardoning Manafort in an desperate attempt to delegitimize the investigation.

The pardon was designed to protect the President from criminal liability...doncha know.@CountScrofula

@CountScrofula The investigation was delegitimized a long time ago.

@eli1601 By whom?

@SimplyTracie I think his response fits neatly into this quote about nationalism, which you can apply to tribal politics.
"All nationalists have the power of not seeing resemblances between similar sets of facts. A British Tory will defend self-determination in Europe and oppose it in India with no feeling of inconsistency. Actions are held to be good or bad, not on their own merits, but according to who does them, and there is almost no kind of outrage — torture, the use of hostages, forced labour, mass deportations, imprisonment without trial, forgery, assassination, the bombing of civilians — which does not change its moral colour when it is committed by 'our' side . . . The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, but he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them."

@CountScrofula Oh, Trump is king of inconsistency. He flip flops like the best in class.

@SimplyTracie Well more to the point - if Trump does it (it being any of his scandals), it's not a crime, it's fine, and it probably didn't happen.
If say, Hillary Clinton did it, the same people would be screaming for her to be executed for treason.
We lose our sense of morality and instead just say things are good or bad according to who did them, rather than the acts themselves.

@CountScrofula and you're a perfect example of that

@CountScrofula Not really. You’re a guy so you don’t think cheating on your wife is a big deal. But it would be for me. True, it’s scandalous but not a crime.
Why do people seem to always bring Hillary or Obama into a discussion about Trump? They are non-factors.

@SimplyTracie I'm illustrating a point here, Clinton was an example. I can use any politician Republicans hate. And I meant "we" in general, not you and me specifically.
If Nancy Pelosi used campaign funds to pay a porn star hush money, Republicans would be screaming for her public execution. But since Trump did it, they believe it never happened or doesn't matter if it did.
Bad deeds should be bad no matter who did them. If your favorite politician does something amoral, it's important to hold them to account. But Trump supporters are so fanatical that they don't believe Trump is capable of immoral behaviour. If he does it, it is moral. That's scary.
I also absolutely have a problem with cheating. I just don't care if politicians do it.

@CountScrofula I understand but I hold everyone to the same standards; you, me, POTUS, Hillary it doesn’t matter.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@SimplyTracie Yep! Not accusing you of anything. I'm talking about Trump supporters in specific.
Any political group can be guilty of moral blindness in cheering for the team, but its super extreme with Trump.

@CountScrofula Yes I would agree
