Very Unpopular Opinion that I Actually Hold

All rights of all workers should be protected, whether the workers are citizens or not, whether they came to the country legally or not, whether they are humans, caterpillars, zebras, etc. Because otherwise, you create an incentive to hire whoever is not protected by those rights. Plus, frankly, that's just moral.

[c=#7700B2] I gotta disagree with you. people should not be given the same rights as legal citizens when they come in illegally[/c]

@PlumBerries You can disagree with me. I'm just saying, that does create an incentive for corporations to hire undocumented immigrants so that they can pay them less and not give them breaks.
I just think the penalties should be stiffer against companies that knowingly hire undocumented immigrants to get around having to provide benefits and a living wage. If it cost them in extra fines what they’d hoped to save on their bottom line and expenditures perhaps they’d be less inclined to cut corners in that way.

@bijouxbroussard That's always been my line about illegal immigration. It's an -intentional- problem. Entire industries are based on their labour.

So improve the labour conditions so nobody is working under the table for less than minimum, and go after employers hard who go for grey market labour.

@bijouxbroussard Pretty similar to my stance, except the framing.
Hmm. I'll buy certain human rights should apply to everyone on American soil. And I think mostly, labor laws should be like that, as far as safety, working conditions, and child labor laws for example. It really doesn't make sense, for example to not have to pay overtime to undocumented aliens.

At the same time, it seems like there's room to talk about public services, etc.

If those who do things legally and ilegally have the same rights, what's the point of being law-abiding?

Better make sure all workers are doing it legally.

@Cierzo I'm just arguing that not having labor laws apply to illegal immigrants may, in fact, punish everyone else more than it punishes them because it gives permission for wages to be driven down, etc.
