First, by actually having a measurable impact on how things turned out, and secondly, by throwing more doubt and confusion into the situation long after the election. It's still paying dividends! Some analyst watched that speech, and realized that if there was ever any time to authorize a hack, this was it - great instincts and initiative. Two years after all of this, a bunch of people are going "same day? wow". And even their tactics are, in the end, an attack on anonymity and free speech on the internet - astrotrufing has been around for a long time, but rarely has it been so overt and destructive.
