@Stargate On one hand, that's locally contextual - basically fashion. But more importantly, this debate doesn't really concern non-binary people, etc. We're only discussing two genders.

@Pikachu Gender is not even a biological concept. Sex and gender are very different things. And it's not just Native Americans who structured their societies in ways that don't quite map directly to ours - there are hundreds of different cultures like that all over the world. And variety of human lifestyles was only greater in the past, when people lived in a more insular and isolated ways.
That's why the whole separation between the concepts came about - anthropologists kept coming up on societies that didn't fit the expected mold - forcing them to separate what is universal and biological, from what is local fashion.
