War of 1812

Apparently, in a telephone conversation about the new tariffs, Trump said to Canadian PM Trudeau, “Didn’t you guys burn down the White House?” Actually, the British did in the War of 1812. We have a president making policy decisions based on a total ignorance of our history. sweet mother of God.

British troops under the command of Rear Admiral George Cockburn burned the White House and the Capitol (which always gets overlooked) in 1814.

To suggest Canadians were somehow involved because Canada wasn't yet its own nation is as ludicrous as saying the Aussies did it.
UserNameSW · 46-50, M
@beckyromero it was the Aussies. Damn those upside down jerks.
DownTheStreet · 51-55, M
And what was Canada called before 1867 and who ruled the country then?
Graylight · 51-55, F
@DownTheStreet Canada was not considered a country until 1867. Therefore, they didn't do anything in the War of 1812. The country, in this context, refers to its government and people, not to land mass.
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
@DownTheStreet If you want to be technical about it, Canada as a nation didn't exist, so it would have been impossible for Canadians to exist, and hence impossible for them to burn down the White House.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
We are still part of the British Commonwealth. @DownTheStreet

speaking of ignorance....The treaty of paris gave upper and lower provinces to the British in 1763 and they were under british rule until 1840 when the upper and lower provinces became the union of Canada. In 1814 when the WH was set fire it was in retaliation, at least in part, because of our destruction of port dover. So, Mr. Trump was more correct than you. Eat that. lol
Gwangi · 46-50, M
@katielass ha! That is a massive reach, but no. The Canadians had nothing to do with the burning of Washington. Not even a nice try.
katielass · F
@Gwangi I suggest you put your head back up your ass. It's not doing you or anyone any good exposed. And my post stands up to historical scrutiny. You either weren't taught, or more likely, couldn't learn.
Gwangi · 46-50, M
@katielass again, the British Army, led by a British General, burned Washington. Had Trump made that comment to British PM May, it would have been accurate, but still would have been a massive breach of diplomatic protocol. Instead, he insulted another strong ally. If nations start combing history to find reasons for revenge, whether economic or otherwise, we are going to have one big fucking mess on our hands.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Whether Canada was technically Canada or British, the fact is that Canadian steal is not a national security threat to the US. The argument for tariffs using this pretense just a little less ridiculous than Trump's silly answer "didn't you burn down the white house?" We have been the closest allies, friends, and trading partners since then. As Trump would say "in the history of the world".
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
Trump doesn't know US history. Anyone surprised?
Quite anti-American of you.

Anyway ... election is over ... catch up with the rest of us

Only took a handful of us of too.... Pussys

To be fair a few Canadians claimed that as well and we generally attribute the history of the American colonies to the USA as well.

British soldiers from the colonies that became Canada.

This joke is being blown out of proportion because of who he is. The claim has been made by many before without anyone nitpicking.
Maximusmax · M
@MethDozer the joke is that Trump claims this has something to do with the tariffs. SMH
MethDozer · M
@DownTheStreet True they didn't, but not really ironic or of any material. Trumps and idiot but the comment doesn't really deserve any attention either.

Fun fact: not all French Canadians are Qebecios.
MethDozer · M
@Maximusmax That's not his reason though. He has other stupid, arguably stupider reasons he wants them.

It's retarded.
