What is the purpose of immigration?

Is it for skills that don't exist in our economy? Is it to provide shelter to the world's poor?

If your country has high unemployment, why bring in immigrants, get the unemployed to fill them job vacancies

@Nyloncapes Sounds like a great plan. I don't know where you are, but here in Canada, there are a few things preventing that. Many of the unemployed are not hired for those jobs because of their good education. They're told, they're over qualified. Stupid, but true. Many simply can't afford to take minimum wage jobs because they, quite literally, get a lot more on welfare, especially if they have kids to support. And those educations have to be paid for. Some just think they're too good for those jobs.
@Nyloncapes I wish we’d invest in training citizens for the jobs that require specialized skills. With a qualified workforce for these jobs right here, there would be less need to bring in people.

@bijouxbroussard Without entrapping them in life-long student loan debt!

Serenitree I am in the UK, south London, yes you are right on them points, people are better of on welfare over here, but we have started to change that over the last few years by putting a cap on the amount they now get to pay for there housing, and starting to make it so people who unemployed are not better of then people who work and contribute to the economy
@Einstok Of course. Other countries invest in their citizens by providing an education that qualifies then to compete in their own countries—and in ours.

@Nyloncapes That's a good plan. Hopefully, if it works over there, some bright person here, will attempt to make it work here too. I had no post secondary education, and was never unemployed except by choice, when I stayed home to care for my preschoolers. When I wanted to work, I worked, because I wasn't too proud to do anything I was physically and intellectually capable of doing.

Serenitree, we have now got the lowest unemployment for decades here now, I have never been unemployed only when I got made redundant ,and when I became a carerfor my mum till she died. Yes I don't know how some people do not want to work but as I say that is all changing here now,
