Nazism didn't land on Germany with a thud. The policies and practices of the Third Reich took years to roll out. Most importantly, the policies targeted "them;" anyone not included in a self-described elite category. "Shame what's happening across town, but as long as the chaos stays off our street..."
After a time, the only way not to flow with the current was to very noticeably buck it, and that never ended well, either. The monster rarely comes pounding at our door; it's invited in because it looks so presentable and attractive.
