Guns: Here is one writer’s idea. Can anyone disagree with this as a starting point?

Universal background checks. This means a National Instant Criminal Background Check for every buyer of every firearm. Last July, Pew Research Center found that 85 percent of Americans — 88 percent of Democrats and 79 percent of Republicans — favored making background checks mandatory for private gun sales and sales at gun shows. Those are Mom and Apple Pie numbers. An earlier poll by Frank Luntz found that a 74 percent majority of past and present NRA members favored expanded background checks.
Ban the bump stock used in Las Vegas. The bump stock turns a semiautomatic weapon into an automatic weapon, which already is banned. In a poll last year, a majority of registered voters wanted the device banned — 79 percent of Democrats and 68 percent of Republicans.
Deny guns to patients diagnosed mentally ill. A HuffPost/YouGov poll in 2014 showed that 54 percent to 23 percent of Americans wanted states to confiscate guns owned by people diagnosed with mental illness. There should be a review process to restore their rights after they recover.
Deny guns to suspected terrorists. Those on a watch list, who currently can buy guns, must be stopped. A method to restore rights must be included.
Age 21 to buy any gun. Under federal law, you must be 21 to buy a handgun. Raise to 21 the age to buy a rifle. It is lethal, too.
One gun purchase a month. That will slow the multiple straw purchaser illegally buying for someone not eligible to own.

Still won't fly ... crosses over too many constitutional rights.

would require amending amendments

and that will never happen ... there are only 17 ... maybe 18 states that would approve it ... less than half that are needed.

The reality is ... there is no legislative fix, without a constitutional overhaul.

and that won't happen.

offer hand gun training to teachers

give guns to security guards

harden the entrances

and use non-lethal water cannons, to handle hallways

And then fire the FBI
What on that list won’t work and why? Your comment is vague and doesn’t address those simple fixes thst don’t violate any constitutional rights. @questionWeaver
Each violates one or more constitutional right ... it is an obstacle field of settled law.

by the time we craft something that would survive legal challenges ... it would be 2070

same issue with the old assault gun band ... it really did not do anything except create a ton of settled court cases.

it was the nonsense law.

pick any one of those suggestions ... and you will run across a constitutional right.

even the 21 yr old thing ... to pass that, it would need so many exceptions ... that it would be meaningless.

as they say either live with guns or toss the constitution
So you support the status quo. @questionWeaver
@jackjjackson

I urge school boards to arm the security guards ... harden entrances ... use card key access ... offer teachers the right to carry ... and use the natural assets of each school building to protect it.

These are not courageous tactical soldiers ... these are kid-shooters who will drop the assault at the first sign of challenge.

We are making it too much about guns and politics
@jackjjackson

Jack ... Nikolas could have bought 3 gallons of kerosene and white gas ... in a knapsack

there were over 200 kids in that hallway exiting

600 kids in the floors above

opens the container ... in less time than it would take him to head for the door and toss a bang flare ... the entire corridor would have ignited

We are lucky he used a gun.

Defenseless kids ... are easy targets for the agrieved.
I provided g exterior and interior school security and additional f cameras is a must. We give other government building deserving less more security. @questionWeaver
Aggrieved? Thst almost makes it sound as though this criminal acted quasi legitimately. I’m sure you didn’t mean THAT. @questionWeaver
@jackjjackson

this is the 1st 137 lb orphan $800,000 shooter captured alive

he will talk

he will tell a story of grievances performed at the hands of a lavish liberal city

just being 137 lbs will make him appear like David going up against Goliath

it will be non-stop

by the end ... the city will seem completely evil

there is no win or spin here

he is alive

remember OJ
