Serious question, why are so many people convinced there's a strong communist sentiment in the US?

It's 2018, guys, there's no communists in America. People are not communist because they want affordable healthcare. Stop that already.

Well there ARE communists, but they're the same fringe minority they've always been. There are no communists in mainstream politics and haven't been for a very long time. Source: I am a form of communist.

I should note that communism is an umbrella term for thousands of political views. USSR-style communism is one of them, and not a very popular one for obvious reasons.

The problem is that the right has pulled to such an insane extreme that they've kind of lost any sense of political perspective. They're so batshit that the concept of a centre is lost, and anyone who isn't part of the tribe is a deranged extremist.
