Serious question, why are so many people convinced there's a strong communist sentiment in the US?

Words have become wayyyyyy to watered down, not to mention I see too many unironic communist memes in fgt sub reddits. Makes me suspect it was imported from Tumblr. And taking any of that seriously would be something I expect from the people in this brain damaged country
