The draft was discontinued in the US in the 1970s.

@Rutterman You still have to sign up for it at 18 in the US.

@quietlitany I thought that was eliminated too.
quietlitany · 36-40, M
@Rutterman Not yet.

@quietlitany No one is being drafted in any case. If we go back to mandatory service, it probably will include multiple options, including military service, and both females and males will be required to serve in some capacity.

@Rutterman @quietlitany Both the draft and The Selective Service Act expired in 1973. President Carter reactivated The Selective Service Act by executive order in 1980 when the USSR invaded Afghanistan.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@hlpflwthat Was anyone drafted after Carter signed the order?
quietlitany · 36-40, M
@Rutterman then why are males still required by law to register?
quietlitany · 36-40, M
@hlpflwthat We're still required to sign up for it.

@Rutterman No one since early '73. Reagan, in fact, criticized Carter's move and promised he would abolish The Selective Service order if elected.

@quietlitany I don't know how I could make it any clearer for you. Rutterman is correct that it was ended in the 70s. It was re-introduced, yes. But that doesn't mean it wasn't ended for a number of years.

@hlpflwthat Easy, stop thinking I'm unclear. We still have to sign up for the draft in the US, even though it's currently inactive. Women don't. Why?
