Mountain Laurel

Her hair was made of fire
And her eyes were mountain green
Her smile my soul's desire
The loveliest lass I'd seen

But her heart was black as coal
Deep beneath the mountain's brow
Darker than the depths untold
Colder than the mountain ground

I have felt her icy stare
I have craved her fiery touch
Love's caress beyond compare
Love's leaving without much

The mountain flower still blooms
The heart that knows her still bleeds
I walk these trails in love's gloom
Missing the one my heart needs.
