I Can’t (poem by Lu Kelly Davis)
We can’t be
Everything we want to be
All at once
Nor can we
Be everything we need to be
To those who love us.
I can’t walk the trails
Of their lonely heart
Because I have
My own lonely trail to hike.
I can’t soar through the clouds
Free as a bird
With no cares in this world
Because
My wings were shorn
Many eons ago
Leaving me trapped
Here on this earth
Looking into the Abyss
Of my lonely heart.
I can’t run to the ends of this earth
For my feet are no longer strong enough
They carry such a heavy burden
It’s too hard to take a simple step.
I dream of the days
When there were no worries
No fears
Not a single moment of pain
Wearing me down,
Until I wake and realize
Those days
Never did exist.
Sometimes…
Only sometimes…
I can sit
Here in the darkness
And feel like
I do not exist.
