He's a bit of an acquired taste, but I think some of what he writes is very sharp and its contemporary style attractive to those who wouldn't normally give poetry a moment's thought. I don't always find his scatological imagery pleasant, but then, that's the point. As a performance poet it's best if you hear him read his own work, but I can hear his distinctive voice in my head as I read for myself.

John Cooper Clarke (in my opinion) is the Bob Dylan of beat poetry, right down to being a near-exact lookalike.
