Halloween candy
Since the kids got so much Halloween candy, we've been letting them each pick three pieces to take with their lunch. We do have to be careful with Link's candy because of his needs. He can only have certain kinds, like soft candy bars (Milky Ways, 3 Musketeers) or marshmallow-filled candy.
Today, his school aide took one of his pieces of candy without even asking him. I know it might seem like a small thing, but it really hurt Link's feelings.
We genuinely like his aide and appreciate the help and care he provides. This isn't about getting him in trouble or making a big deal out of something. But Link was excited about the candy he picked, and having it taken without permission upset him.
What makes this especially hard is that Link needs a lot of extra help and support, and sometimes that makes situations like this more complicated. He doesn't always feel comfortable speaking up for himself, and today he was afraid to say anything. As his parent, that breaks my heart. I never want his need for extra help to make people forget that he has feelings, boundaries, and a right to be heard just like anyone else.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle this without creating unnecessary tension. I want to maintain a good relationship with his aide, but I also need Link to know that someone will stand up for him when he feels he can't stand up for himself.
What would you do? Would you talk directly to his aide or bring it up with the teacher?
