Iam out and about on Dartmoor. Again. Lol

Walked around Burritor reservoir and then drove to Princetown. Dartmoor. Pics of Dartmoor Prison. Two bridges pub. A phone box the kray twins met Frank Mitchell at after his escape from Dartmoor jail in 1966. Now sat eating a lemon slice and enjoy the view at dusk. Its peaceful and beautiful.

A beautiful part of the world. In the past I had occasion to visit the prison from time to time. It was a lovely day out for me, because I was going to go home afterwards and they had one of the better visitor centres of the various prisons I visited. (For clarity not as an official Prison Visitor).

I wonder what will happen to Princetown now that the prison has closed. As far as I could make out that was the only source of employment actually in the village. I have an excellent video of the railway that used to run across from Yelverton. I can't help it would've made an excellent tourist attraction, although the conditions in the winter would probably have made it far too costly to run.

Great photos.

@FreddieUK Wow. Cool story about the railway. I cant remember it but its a walk/cycle track now. Its a shame it would have made an attraction for sure. But i guess the 50s and 60s when people started jet setting off abroad it gave less reason to have one. Although im sure they still do well. Im glad you like the photos. I just find it tranquil in most parts of it. And as for the Jail id guess most if all but a very few residents of Princetown work elsewhere now.

@FreddieUK Dartmoor is/was run as part the prison estate in Devon with a young offenders institute near Newton Abbot and a regular prison in Exeter. It is not a nice place, even before the closure for radon gas. They've always had difficulty retaining prison officers there. My dad often used to run into work parties of prisoners when he was training on MOD land.

@SunshineGirl I wouldn’t have wanted to be inside or working there. It was just nice for a day out. I was always disappointed to have been visiting a serial recidivist. 🙁 Sadly, no one else did.

I was looking at Dartmoor yesterday from about 30 miles due north. The western side was bathed in sunlight, the eastern side completely obscured by cloud. Looks like you picked the right spot!

Beautiful scenery.. thanks for taking us along
Perry1968 · M
@LavidaRaq My absolute pleasure 🙂 Anytime. Its getting dark and cold now though so will take a drive across the moorland to Ashburton and back down the main A38 road back to Plymouth. I hope you had a lovely Christmas day.

@Perry1968 thank you. I hope you did as well.

Very austere but beautiful scenery!

The old prison looks grim.

Is that telephone kiosk still fully-fitted? Those are becoming rare now!
Perry1968 · M
@ArishMell No. The jail is recently shut due to radon. Yet still has contractors etc etc in there lol. And the phone boxes are around. Ive only see just one working though. Most are empty or used for book swaps.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Perry1968 Oh, I thought Dartmoor Prison had closed a long time ago. The hazard from radon is real but the risks probably much lower to contractors than to prisoners, simply by much shorter exposure.

Yes, there are many phone-boxes still about, unused, as swap libraries or housing defibriilators, but I meant ones still holding fully functional telephones.
Perry1968 · M
@ArishMell No. Very very few functional phone boxes now. There is one. I still remember the number to it 😆 This is one from a kid. Its 01752 562511 Its based at pottery rd. Devonport. Plymouth. The area i grew up in as a child. Thats the only functioning one i know of tbh. Not that you wanted the number 😄 It just NEVER leaves my mind. I used to ring my then girlfriend from it. She later became my wife 25 years.

How gorgeous!! That bridge is 😌🤌. Love those bridges! 😄
Perry1968 · M
@JustNik 😄 They're cute aren't they. Lol. Its a entrance pass to the pub. Wider than they look but yes they are beautiful. Theres so many nice spots around that national park.

Perry1968 · M

Lovely. Did you see the Dartmoor Ponies?
Perry1968 · M
@meggie Not today. I mean i passed by some. But the other day took some carrots and fed about 6 or 7 of them on my way back home. Theyre tame to a point 😄 I just stay away from ever behind behind. I love them though. They just have the power to boot me 3 fields away 😆
Perry1968 · M
@TheDeathOCuHullainn It is a bit mate. I got tbh. 3 degrees atm. But sat in my car now as just about dark.
