In the mirror you see the reverse of what you see in photos and of how others see you. The effect of reversing the image is more pronounced the less symmetrical your face is. Any deviance to the left or right is doubled in a reversed image in terms of its new position relative to where you're used to seeing it. If your nose is a fraction to the right then it will be just as far to the left in a flipped image but that makes it twice as far from where you are used to seeing it. So the effect can seem dramatic.
