They thrived and evolved without them, went to the moon without them, cured diseases without them, and in general, did quite well without them.

So, put the dang things down when you are driving!

BBC Radio Four's weekly Broadcasting House programme has just carried out an intriguing though small-scale experiment with several volunteers.

It exchanged their "smart"-'phones with simple voice & text only ones for a short time - a fortnight I think. So they could still make and receive important calls but were free of all the rest of it.

When they swapped them back, the presenters interviewed the subjects about their experiences.

These of course varied but at least some found it actually a release, allowing them to spend time on other things without feeling they had to be looking at the thing all the time.

Isn't it illegal to use them when driving, where you are? It is here, in the UK, and I am pretty sure it is in many other countries, too.

Mine is switched off and packed away when I am on a journey anywhere, but it's a basic type, not "smart", anyway. It's switched off and in another room in the house at the moment, too.
