Bottom line is I don't want to have to depend on the dev to make their app compatible with Wayland

The problem really is lazy app developers. They could create their own driver's (extreme case) if they really wanted to.
The problem becomes the size of the app. Nobody wants to do that just for one app.
BTW GTP 5.4 is really pissing me off on this issue. It keeps on defending some type of commercialism, especially on X11.
I have no idea why unless Microsoft is somehow influencing it now. There is a slight tie between IBM and Microsoft. Especially regarding windowing algorithms. Pretty ancient stuff though. Both were using messaging at the same time back in the day.
