I am shocked by this!

No, I am not shocked by the result. I am shocked that he found 99 people willing to part with their phones for an hour! 😂

Google Maps interpreted the concentration of phones as a traffic jam.

That is amusing!

There is a serious point though.

Any portable-telephone needs trace the instrument so the system can work!

It is not tracing the carrier per se, just the 'phone.

Even if Google (other operators are available... I think) is monitoring your locations it does not know why you are there - beyond the obvious and hardly sensitive, such as in a supermarket.

Such tracing can be used in criminal investigations, but only for good reason, and even then location tracking only shows where the 'phone, and presumably its user, were at the time.

If you are that worried don't go around with the thing switched on and in your hand, pocket or car all day long. Leave it at home or in (say) holiday accommodation unless you genuinely need take it with you; and for security when leaving the car parked unattended. Many situations require it OFF anyway.

(Mine comes on long journeys with me, but I switch it on principally only for some, brief social-arrangement call. Or to request help if the car breaks down, and I have been in that situation.)

Scary that they are tracking our phones

But perhaps that was the point of the exercise, to show that.
