can anyone give reassurance about my computer files

a year ago i tried to move 5000 picture files on my computer to another folder on my computer, but i got a pop up message telling me that this location already contains these files do i wish to merge them or cancel? so i clicked cancel at the time and all the files i was going to move disappeared from my desktop?

are those files still hopefully on my computer somewhere and they didn't accidentley get deleted?

im praying they never got deleted.

Some moved and some did not. Those that disappeared from the desktop are now in the folder you tried to move them to. Just move the rest and hit merge/overwrite, then the folder will contain them all (you'll only lose stuff if the folder contained *different* pictures with the same filename, but that's unlikely; in case, create a copy of the destination folder before merging)
