Loaded question. For gaming/programming should I go with a laptop or pc? [I Build Computers]

But I have more questions. I have very limited knowledge of the internal components and what types are compatible with each other and what each type has to offer in terms of performance.

Let me put it to you this way, I want something affordable that isn't going to blow a hole into my checking account and I will spend extra money if I have to. I'm not looking for intense gaming, maybe steam games or league of legends but I also want to get back into programming such as C#, python, javascript etc. This computers intended use is to start retraining and reteaching myself since I don't have time or money to go back to college.

So what I'm asking for is helpful advice. Good places to design my own PC if the laptop option isn't viable which is what a lot of people are leading me to believe. Websites so I can educate myself on these specs such as CPU, graphics processor, etc. And in your opinion some of the best overall specs and brands to go with.

Again loaded question but I appreciate any advice on this. Basically I have a craving for knowledge once again. Ive spent too long spending my days off lounging on the couch and doing nothing. I want to re-educate myself especially in foreign languages, computer programming and database systems, discrete math, all the good stuff.

Do you have a budget for learning? Are there local groups you can dig into? Whats your computer budget? Do you have any need to be portable with your setup?

@stound small budget for learning. I was going to resort to text books I already have, some of the ebooks I already have or what I could find. possibly enroll in something like Khan academy or something similar. As far as local groups I have no idea and wouldn't even know how to search for them. budget I'd say no more than 1200. Does not need to be portable, I pretty much go to work and back home everyday
@CuddleFeesh i think you might find it useful to just get a chomebook and invest more time in learning things like aws or various cloud providers. A base droplet from digital ocean is $5 a month. You might also find some useful ebook bundles on humblebundle.com

@stound cool thank you. Im only in the beginning of this process. So this is alot to take in
@CuddleFeesh if you just want to code for yourself, you can make whatever work. If you want someone to pay you to code, you're virtually certain to be using a cloud of some sort

@stound Well at the moment I'm just reteaching myself. At this point I doubt I can do much more than just a "Hello World" program lol
@CuddleFeesh fair... im just trying to gage where you want to be. Its not impossible to change along the way, but its easier to switch your project from a half track to a tank than from a car to a ship.

@stound I'm not entirely sure myself just yet. All I can tell you is I don't want my previous education to be wasted, I want to learn more, I want to do something constructive and put some life back into my life so to speak. I enjoy coding, I enjoy math proofs, I enjoy learning in general. Perhaps at one point or another I will develop it all into a career.
@CuddleFeesh yeah, learn cloud stuff of some sort

@stound Not sure I'm quite ready for that just yet. The most advance I ever got was designing data structures such as qeueus, stacks, hash tables, heaps, etc. I got burned out in college
@CuddleFeesh just giving you your target. You can start small, and work your way up.

@stound And I appreciate the input. This process im starting, well its more than just reinventing my passions but its also like an attempt at coping with my life. Finding something that excites me, finding something that makes me re-evaluate my life and keeping my mind free of things I don't want to think about by constantly keeping it busy with something else. Something that has value
@CuddleFeesh uh. Im not sure that fits into a healthy response to things, but hopefully it goes well

@stound Maybe I'm just bad with words. The idea is to find something to enrich my life rather than squander it away like I have been doing all years.
