how would you know if you had a virus deleting your personal files

[c=003BB2][i]on my computer, at times i think i see less media folders than what i had, and less pictures and music in folders than i thought i had...would i know if i had a virus which deletes files? would a virus like this delete all your files in one go or just gradually like one by one?[/i][/c]
