How can I type this U looking and upside down U looking symbol on Mac?

I'm not a Mac user but you may want to look into how to enable inserting Unicode sequences on a Mac:

If you're going to be typing it a lot and don't want to memorize Unicode sequences, you may want to Google to see if there is a way to create a custom keymap for your keyboard, so you can have up to four characters per alphanumeric key (by using, for instance, whatever the Mac equivalent of using the AltGr and AltGr+Shift key modifier key combos is, to access the third and fourth character you've mapped any specific key to).
