Computer techy people

If I’ve already defragmented my hard drive and my hard drive is having errors

My computer friend told me I need a new hard drive but I haven’t completely restored it yet. It would be my first factory restore. Should I just do that? Should that be my next step? I wouldn’t be losing any of my information because all of my information is place in various clouds so I wouldn’t be at any loss whatsoever

Except for storage, I’m assuming

the hard drive errors mean the hard drive is having mechanical issues and is in the process of failing.

think of the errors like an old man having chest pains when he runs up the stairs

it means he's going to have a heart attack - and you can't know in advance exactly when it's going to happen.

same thing with your hard drive - it's telling you it's about to fail so a factory restore won't fix it.

hard drives fail at the rate of about 10% per year - so if you have 5 years on the drive you're about average - if it is older you're on borrowed time.

hard drives are pretty cheap - if you can afford a solid state one it will speed up your computer because they read/write faster than the mechanical ones do.

@Pretzel thank you you explained it very well. I finally think I get it now.

@DeluxedEdition thanks! hope it goes smoothly

Ask your tech friends to do a full format of the drive. And reinstall windows if you have everything backed up.

It’s the only foolproof way to sort out your issues provided it’s not physically failing.

The reliability can be determined by the current size. As sectors become unusable and the g-list is expended, the available size begins to reduce. This can give you a dipstick measurement of how long you have.

@MasterLee I dropped her off at the repair man today I need to stop putting this off

if you do get a new hard drive, I would recommend a solid state drive
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@JestAJester may I ask what this is and what is the significance?😗😗

@DeluxedEdition theyre faster and more reliable. A regular harddrive is mechanical and more prone to breaking.

Yeah if it's a mechanical error you can usually hear weird clicking or sounds you generally didn't hear from your computer before, then yeah TBH it's fecked and it's not worth saving if you got the data you need backed up already but if it's the machines OS that's got buggy and packed out then sure hit the factory reset button. I mean it won't do any harm either way you can hit the reset button for nothing but I suspect with your friend saying you need a new one it's a mechanical error with the harddrive itself either way not worth investing too much effort into particularly if you have everything you need off it already.

Was it working well before?
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@sexyjigsaw honestly yes a little slower than usual, but not bad
@DeluxedEdition if it's breaking after you tried fixing it, check Pretzel's suggestion. It could be old. If it isn't, lmk
You need to get a new one ASAP. If you can retrieve data off the old one then do that as it will liikely fail completely - although if all your information is on cloud then you shouldn't lose anything - but make sure it all is on cloud (just in case you have stuff in your Documents folder or perhaps pictures etc.

How long did you had it?
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@FreestyleArt I’m going to have to say 7 years

@DeluxedEdition I think it's best to replace the hard drive and maybe get an SSD connecting to your motherboard.

This is a complicated one. You're going to have to switch your PC off then on again and while it's loading, do a hand stand for about 3 seconds, than back on your feet, do 4 on the spot back flips, dance like witch, pour yoghurt on your keyboard and yell U.S.A 5 times.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@SW-User yell usa five times 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂
theoldschoola · 46-50, M
if your hard drive is "having errors" as in sectors of it have gone you need to replace it ASAP. SSDs are super cheap now so it wouldn't be a huge expense.

The hard drive is failing.
You'll will need a new hard drive, backup what you can and get a new one.

A small suggestion, I'd recommend also getting an SSD for your operating system. Hard drives are slow. Even if it's just for your OS your experience will be vastly improved.
