How are newer laptops better?

Far better screen resolution.

More storage and the new storage (SSD) will not be damaged if you moved your laptop abruptly.

Lighter.

Consumes less power and goes longer on battery alone.

Offer better communications capabilities.

Faster.

Not sure they are, other than quicker memory.

Faster processing unit longer battery life better graphics 🤷🏾‍♂️
